πŸͺΆ Fortuna High Celebrates California Native American Day with Traditional Brush Dancing

September 21, 2026 β€’ Damon Gym

Fortuna High students gathered in Damon Gym on September 21 for a special cultural presentation in recognition of California Native American Day, officially observed on September 25 this year.

The event featured a performance by the All My Relations Brush Dancers, who shared traditional dances and cultural practices with the Fortuna High student body.

Dancers dressed in traditional regalia featuring feathers, shells, beads, and other carefully crafted elements. Carrying ceremonial items and moving together across Bob Orr Court, the performers gave students an opportunity to experience an important part of local Native American cultural traditions.

Fortuna High is located on the ancestral lands of the Wiyot people, whose history, culture, and continuing presence are an important part of the Humboldt County community. Events like this provide opportunities for students to learn about the Indigenous peoples of our region and the traditions that continue to be practiced and passed down through generations.

For many Fortuna Huskies, the presentation was an opportunity to see local cultural traditions firsthand, gaining a deeper appreciation for the history and living cultures of the communities surrounding our school.

πŸ“Έ Sharing and Respecting Cultural Traditions

When photographing the performance, we were initially asked not to share the images on social media. After speaking with the leader of the All My Relations Brush Dancers and explaining how Fortuna High shares student and community photography, he graciously agreed that we could publish the images as long as they were not being used for monetization.

Fortuna High’s social media accounts are not monetized, and our photography has always been shared with the community free of charge and without watermarks. Our goal is to document the people, events, and experiences that make our school and community special while respecting the wishes of those we photograph.

We appreciate the group’s willingness to allow us to share these images and recognize the importance of respecting cultural traditions and the people who carry them forward.

A special thank-you to the All My Relations Brush Dancers for visiting Fortuna High and sharing their traditions, knowledge, and culture with our students.

πŸ’™πŸ€ Thank you for helping our Huskies learn more about the rich cultural heritage of our region! 🐾
