Honoring the Wiyot People
Fortuna High School respectfully acknowledges that we are located on the unceded ancestral lands of the Wiyot people, who have lived in and cared for this region surrounding Humboldt Bay since time immemorial.
We honor the Wiyot people — past, present, and future — and recognize their deep and ongoing connection to this land, its waters, and its communities. We acknowledge the impacts of colonization, displacement, and historical injustices, and we commit to continued learning, respect, and partnership.
We also recognize the Wiyot concept of “Gou Rrugulu’s” — “I recognize you for what you are,” a value rooted in welcoming, understanding, and honoring one another with openness and respect.
Commitment to Inclusion & Belonging
Inspired by these values, Fortuna High is committed to creating a space where all students, staff, and community members feel seen, respected, and valued.
We affirm and support individuals of all identities, including those within the 2S/LGBTQIA+ community, recognizing that diversity in gender identity, expression, and sexuality has long existed within Indigenous cultures and continues to be an important part of our shared human experience.
We also encourage connection with local organizations such as Queer Humboldt, which provides resources, advocacy, and community support for LGBTQIA+ individuals and families in our region.
We strive to foster a culture of:
- Respect and dignity for all
- Courage to stand against discrimination, including racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia
- Openness to listen, learn, and grow together

Moving Forward Together
Land acknowledgments are not just words — they are a commitment to action. We encourage our school community to:
- Learn about the history and culture of the Wiyot people
- Support Indigenous voices and initiatives in our region
- Treat one another with empathy, kindness, and understanding
At Fortuna High, we aim to reflect the spirit of Gou Rrugulu’s — recognizing each person for who they are, and building a community grounded in respect, inclusion, and connection.
